The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Joseph James (ASN: 1798927), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 368th Infantry Regiment, 92d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Binarville, France, 30 September 1918. Private James went to the aid of a wounded companion under very severe machine-gun and artillery fire and brought him to cover. He stayed with the wounded man, giving him all possible aid until assistance came, when he returned to his place with the platoon.
