James (ASN: 2339853), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company L, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant James displayed great courage and skill on a patrol across the Marne near Les Evaux, 13 July 1918. After several unsuccessful attempts had been made to get patrols across the river at night, he swam across in broad daylight taking with him a wire by which a boat containing his two companions was drawn across without attracting attention of the enemy. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

While serving with Company L, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant James led a patrol into le Charmel on 26 July 1918, which other patrols had just reported to be held by the enemy and returned with valuable information which enabled his battalion commander to enter that night without a casualty.

After many attempts to get patrols across the Marne had failed, Sergeant James alone swam the river, taking with Mm a wire, by which a boat containing two of his comrades was drawn across, without attracting the attention of the enemy.
