The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private William Andrew Jacobson (ASN: 17461), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 128th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Gesnes, France, 7 October 1918. When his battalion was forced to retire under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, Private Jacobson went out in front of the line, administering first aid and bringing in the wounded who had been left lying in exposed positions. While so engaged he received two wounds, the second of which caused his death before he reached the aid station.
