While serving with Company B 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 17 June 1918 during the attack on a portion of the Bois de Belleau still held by the Germans, during the course of the attack, Sergeant Hyde saw a wounded comrade lying about 75 yards in advance of the line. He rushed out to the man under a rain of machine gun bullets and upon reaching him found it impossible to pick him up. He lay down, placed the wounded soldier across his back and crawled back to the company trench.
