The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Robert W. Hyatt (ASN: 46030), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Exermont, France, 4 October 1918. On two occasions Sergeant Hyatt exposed himself to heavy enemy fire while advancing in front of our lines in order to make observations of the enemy’s activities on Hill 240. Upon his second journey to this exposed position he was severely wounded in the leg and was forced to remain in the enemy’s lines until rescued the following day by our advancing troops.
