The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private William L. Hunter (ASN: 2105021), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 58th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in Bois-du-Fays, France, September 26 – 6 October 1918. While on duty as a company runner, Private Hunter repeatedly carried messages when exposed to artillery and machine-gun fire. Although reduced to a state of physical exhaustion, he refused to be relieved and continued to perform his duty of maintaining liaison.
