The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Joseph Hartman Hummer (ASN: 1256327), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 108th Machine-Gun Battalion (Attached), 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fismes, France, 5 September 1918. While assigned to duty as first-aid man, Private Hummer rescued two wounded men despite intense hostile machine-gun and rifle fire. While so engaged he himself was badly wounded, but continued on his mission, carrying the wounded men to places of safety. The indomitable spirit of self-sacrifice and splendid devotion to duty thus displayed served as an example to the men of his organization, inspiring them to greater endeavors.
