The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Maurice W. Howe, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 167th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Haumont, France, 22 September 1918. Captain Howe commanded an early morning raid on the town of Haumont, and not only executed the raid successfully, but returned alone a second time to the town to be assured that none of his men had been left wounded. He inflicted severe losses on the enemy and took 17 prisoners.
