The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George H. Howard, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 326th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Juvin, France, October 16 – 26, 1918. On October 16 Lieutenant Howard was severely wounded by a machine-gun bullet which struck him in the hip. After having his wound dressed at the first-aid station he refused to be evacuated, but instead returned to his platoon and continued to lead it for the remaining ten days of the engagement. He constantly refused to leave his command until ordered to the rear by his battalion commander, although suffering intense pain from his wounds.
