Hovatter (ASN: 937709), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 5th Machine-Gun Battalion (Attached), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Medeah Farm, France, 4 October 1918. When the artillery barrage of the enemy had lowered upon the infantry to which he was attached, necessitating an alteration in their position, Private Hovatter, regardless of personal safety, remained to render aid to the wounded and to provide for their evacuation.
