The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Eugene W. Horton, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ville-Savoye, France, 22 August 1918. When his company was attacked by greatly superior numbers of the enemy, Private Horton continued to operate his automatic rifle although exposed to heavy machine-gun fire. His gallant conduct was a material factor in the successful repulse of the enemy who were endeavoring to turn the flank of his organization.
