The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Alfred J. Hook, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 106th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, east of Ronssoy, France, 27 September 1918. Lieutenant Hook exhibited great courage and gallantry in taping off the line of departure for his company under a heavy shell and machine-gun fire, Later in the attack this daring officer was killed at the head of his company.
