The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Frank Frederick Holtz (ASN: 1705126), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, October 11 – 13, 1918. His platoon held up and cut off from the remainder of the company, he volunteered to establish liaison and summon reinforcements after several runners had been killed or captured in the attempt. Passing through intense artillery and machine-gun fire, he carried word to his company commander, but was mortally wounded while returning to his platoon.
