Private Holmes distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 353d Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action north of Limey, France, 12 September 1918, in going to the aid of a wounded officer under heavy enemy fire.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Oliver Wendell Holmes (ASN: 2847904), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 353d Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Limey, France, 12 September 1918. Seeing his lieutenant fall severely wounded, Private Holmes, with another stretcher bearer, rushed through heavy machine-gun fire to his assistance. When they had placed the lieutenant on their stretcher and were endeavoring to go through the heavy fire to the dressing station, Private Holmes fell mortally wounded.
