Holmes (ASN: 551434), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the River Marne, near Chateau-Thierry, France, on 15 July 1918, with six men, Corporal Holmes surrounded a clump of bushes and captured sixty of the enemy after having killed their leader. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Harvey Henry Holmes (ASN: 551434), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, July 15 – 19, 1918. Corporal Holmes observed that a number of Germans were moving toward a clump of bushes near our front during the battle of the Marne. With a patrol of his men Corporal Holmes rushed the position under heavy machine-gun fire and captured 60 prisoners.
