    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Christian R. Holmes, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ansauville, France, 22 March 1918. As leader of a patrol First Lieutenant Holmes displayed extraordinary heroism and daring; he cut and crawled through 12 strands of wire in front of an enemy listening post, leaped upon the sentinel, made him a prisoner, and brought him back through “No Man’s Land”.
