The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Richard W. Holland (ASN: 1384038), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 130th Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Marcheville, France, 10 November 1918. When his platoon was in an isolated position, exposed to heavy fire, Private First Class Holland volunteered to carry a message through intense machine-gun and artillery fire. Though his rifle was shot from his hands, he delivered the message.
