The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Samuel Hill (ASN: 1829765), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 320th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bethincourt, France, 26 September 1918. Assisted by three comrades, Private Hill volunteered and went to the aid of a platoon which was held up by machine-gun fire. Although being under constant fire of the enemy, he flanked the stronghold and by effective use of his automatic rifle killed two officers and three enlisted men and captured the gun.
