The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Herman C. Higgs (ASN: 280029), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 1st Gas Regiment (Attached), American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon, France, 26 September 1918. Private Higgs worked continuously and heroically under withering fire from machine-guns, upon several occasions voluntarily going out ahead of the first wave to administer first aid to wounded soldiers. His untiring efforts and personal bravery saved the fives of many wounded soldiers and were a source of inspiration to the combat troops.
