The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant William H. Higgins (ASN: 1735641), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 309th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Loges, France, 16 October 1918. Although painfully wounded early in an attack, Sergeant Higgins refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his platoon in the advance, displaying marked personal bravery.
