The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Benjamin Hartley Hewit, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 316th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon, France, September 28 – 29, 1918. Captain Hewit led his men into battle with such fearlessness and valor that he was at all times able to reorganize and continue forward under most difficult circumstances. Although wounded, he remained in command, always being under terrific shell and machine-gun fire, but not until he had received a second wound did he relinquish his command. While being taken from the field he received a third wound.
