The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Herman L. Hess, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cierges, France, 29 September 1918. Accompanied by a soldier, Lieutenant Hess made two trips through fire, and rescued two wounded left lying in an exposed place took up a new position.
