    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Thomas L. Hensley (ASN: 2339279), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company H, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private First Class Hensley displayed exceptional bravery and self sacrifice near Roncheres, on 29 July 1918. He repeatedly went from one to another of his wounded comrades to minister to them in an open field swept by heavy machine gun and sniper fire and was killed while on one of these missions. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Thomas L. Hensley (ASN: 2339279), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Roncheres, France, 29 July 1918. Going from one wounded comrade to another, exposed to heavy machine-gun and deadly sniper fire, Private Hensley administered aid to all that he could reach before being killed in the performance of this heroic mission.
