The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) James Hannan Hennelly, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 10th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Eugene, France, July 14 – 15, 1918. On duty with the infantry as liaison officer, Lieutenant Hennelly was captured by a part of the enemy while taking a message back to the artillery. Shortly afterwards he succeeded in making his escape; and although he had been twice wounded, he made his way through a heavy barrage and delivered his message.
