The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Corps of Engineers) Dan Storms Helmick, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 1st Engineers, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Moncy, France, 9 October 1918. Captain Helmick personally organized his company for the attack and directed the consolidation of the captured objective. He established his post of command in the front line, and repeatedly passed up and down the line directing his men under heavy shell fire until severely wounded.
