The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Grover Peter Heinzmann, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 114th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 12 October 1918. After having seen several of his men killed or wounded in an attempt to deliver a message through a heavily shelled area, Lieutenant Heinzmann volunteered and carried the dispatch to its objective, then offering to return through the same barrage, on any mission required by his battalion commander.
