The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal William G. Haynes (ASN: 73016), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Givry, France, 20 July 1918. Upon learning that a soldier lay wounded in a shell hole, Corporal Haynes voluntarily left shelter, went through a heavy machine-gun fire and carried the wounded soldier to the dressing station.
