The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Field Artillery) Casey H. Hayes, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 10th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Greves Farm, France, 15 July 1918. Major Hayes, then on duty as battalion adjutant, assumed command during the absence of the battalion commander. Communication between battalion headquarters and the batteries had been cut off by an enemy bombardment of the greatest intensity, but this officer, in entire disregard for his own safety, went to each battery position and gave orders, the execution of which aided materially in stopping the German advance at a critical moment.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Major (Field Artillery) Casey H. Hayes, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, at Greves Farm, France, Major Hayes assumed command of the 2d Battalion int he absence of the Battalion Commander. This night saw one of the heaviest bombardments by the enemy of the entire war. Along in the early hours of 15 July, when communications between the Batteries and the Battalion had been cut, this officer went to each battery position, under the heaviest of shell fire, and personally gave orders, the execution of which had great value in stopping the advance of the enemy.
