The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James Gillespie Haverfield (ASN: 1518700), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Olsene, Belgium, 31 October 1918. Sergeant Haverfield advanced alone under heavy machine-gun fire and killed two and captured three, also two machine-guns of the enemy, who were delivering effective machine-gun fire on the attacking wave of his company and delaying its progress.
