The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Andrew O. Hatlestad (ASN: 2193012), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon, France, 3 October 1918. Private Hatlestad repeatedly carried messages to the front-line platoons through heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. He was killed by enemy fire while carrying a message to the front line under heavy fire.
