The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) George U. Harvey, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the Vesle river, France, 23 August 1918. Although under severe machine-gun fire from the enemy Captain Harvey, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, led a patrol of seven men against an enemy machine-gun nest that was inflicting heavy losses on his company. His seven men being wounded, Captain Harvey was the first to reach the nest where three of the enemy were killed, one taken prisoner, and two machine guns captured.
