The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal William L. Harris (ASN: 60605), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Remy, France, 13 September 1918. While acting as a runner, between company and battalion headquarters, under terrific shell fire, Corporal Harris carried messages without regard to personal danger, until struck and killed by a shell.
