The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward Cedric Harris, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine Gun Company, 321st Infantry Regiment, 81st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Grimaucourt, France, 11 November 1918. Under the fire of three machine guns, firing upon him from different directions, Lieutenant Harris took his gun through the enemy wire and mounted it. He would not permit his men to remain in such a dangerous position, and, after being wounded severely, ordered his men to leave him.
