The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Mechanic Charles Harris (ASN: 66031), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Trugny, France, 22 July 1918. Mechanic Harris voluntarily carried a message from his company post of command to regimental headquarters, amid a storm of enemy shell and machine-gun fire, accomplishing his mission and thus preventing the division artillery from firing upon its own troops. On a previous occasion during the Aisne-Marne offensive he had carried important messages through intense enemy fire, once having encountered on such a mission four of the enemy, one of whom he killed and three of whom he brought in as prisoners. His outstanding bravery and devotion to duty served as an example to the men of his regiment.
