The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Sherman G. Harriman, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 2d Engineers, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Crezancy, France, July 15 – 16, 1918. Assisting in the removal of the wounded, Lieutenant Harriman, then sergeant, drove an ambulance throughout the entire night, continuing until several hits by the enemy completely disabled his machine. The next morning he led his men into the trenches through an intense shelling and remained in command for 12 hours after being wounded.
