The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Herman Lorenz Hansen (ASN: 80982), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne-a-Arnes, France, 3 October 1918. Corporal Hansen voluntarily exposed himself to heavy machine-gun fire, and with the assistance of another soldier, brought in from an exposed position a soldier severely wounded. Corporal Hansen was killed after he had relieved himself of the wounded man.
