The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Leon M. Hanna (ASN: 1387060), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Chaume, France, 10 October 1918. When his platoon had suffered heavy casualties and was held up by fire from a hidden machine-gun emplacement, he advanced alone under heavy fire, and locating the enemy position, charged it. He bayoneted the enemy gunner and captured two of the gun crew, enabling his platoon to resume the advance.
