The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Arthur E. Hamm, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while Commanding Company M, 326th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Flirey, France, 4 August 1918, Though wounded at the start of a daylight raid, Captain Hamm continued to lead his men, reaching a depth of 1000 yards into the enemy lines under heavy fire, setting an example of fortitude which contributed largely to the success of the operation. He was killed in action during the St. Mihiel drive.
