The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Gordon A. Hambrick (ASN: 40296), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Medeah Ferme, France, 3 October 1918. Believing his platoon commander to be killed and finding himself in front of our attacking wave, Sergeant Hambrick gathered a number of men, detached from their organizations, who had pushed to the front, and led them against an enemy position across ground swept by machine-gun fire. With 25 men, he attacked a strongly defended enemy position occupying the right flank, capturing 80 prisoners and five enemy machine guns, and held the position until the arrival of our attacking wave.
