The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Frank A. Hamak (ASN: 2380866), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chaumont, South of Sedan, France, 8 November 1918. Severely wounded in the legs by machine-gun fire, and unable to walk, Private Hamak refused to accept assistance from his comrades rather than expose them to danger, and crawled five hundred yards to a dressing station.
