The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Harold De La Monte Hall (ASN: 561549), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 59th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Brieulles, France, 29 September 1918. When his company was in a perilous position Private Hall volunteered and carried a message to battalion headquarters, a distance of 1,000 yards, under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. On his return journey he was killed.
