The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Claude Price Hale (ASN: 2180240), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 354th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Remonville, France, 1 November 1918. Braving the deadly machine-gun and artillery fire, he worked unceasingly, and with no regard for his personal safety in administering to wounded men and assisting them to places of safety. He constantly went forward into the open under machine-gun fire to aid fallen comrades, and his work was the means of saving many lives.
