    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Fred L. Gunn (ASN: 2677), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 28th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at the battle of Cantigny, France, May 28 – 31,1918. Private Gunn repeatedly on his own initiative left the security of the trench to administer first aid under fire and in full view of the enemy snipers and machine-gunners. His brave conduct was a noble example and his ministration relieved suffering and saved lives.

Gunn, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private First Class Gunn distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 28th Infantry, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during the operations connected with the capture and defense of Cantigny, France, 27 to 31 May 1918. Private First Class Gunn repeatedly and voluntarily left the security of the trenches to administer first aid, this under heavy shell fire and in full view of the enemy snipers and machine gunners.
