The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Arthur J. Gunderson (ASN: 1386503), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the Meuse River, France, 26 September 1918. When the advance of his platoon was held up by fire from three .77 fieldpieces which were being protected by one machine gun, Sergeant Gunderson, with two comrades, advanced on this battery, which was firing point-blank, and, by short rushes and with utter disregard for personal safety, put the machine gun out of action, killed the crew, and captured the three fieldpieces, thus enabling his platoon to advance to its objective.
