The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Wilk Bryan Gunckle (ASN: 1531261), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Hearne, Belgium, 3 November 1918. Private Gunckle volunteered and guided ammunition carriers to advanced positions, despite the fact that he was seriously wounded in the face, which made it necessary to hold a bandage in place during the journey to and from the front. After receiving treatment at the first-aid station he returned to his duties.
