The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Walter Griffith (ASN: 43226), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Argonne Forest, France, 4 October 1918. Private Griffith was delivering a message to the front line when he encountered an enemy machine-gun firing on our front line troops from the rear. He crawled to the emplacement and silenced the fire from the gun by killing both gunners.
