The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal James A. Greene (ASN: 53739), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cantigny, France, 7 June 1918. While in charge of an outpost, Corporal Greene was attacked by a patrol of 12 Germans and held his ground single-handed after the other members of the outpost were either killed or wounded. He inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy patrol, repulsing it, and then held his post until relief came.
