The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Herbert D. Green (ASN: 2426055), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 19 October 1918. Private Green voluntarily crossed an area swept by heavy machine-gun and artillery fire to carry water to distressed members of his platoon. He was killed in the performance of this self-assigned task.
