The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Garland Green (ASN: 546149), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918. During the German artillery bombardment of 15 July Private Green carried messages between company and battalion headquarters, and, although wounded in the arm, refused evacuation until relieved two days later.

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Garland Green (ASN: 546149), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company D, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Green showed exceptional bravery during shell and machine gun fire of the most violent nature near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918, by carrying messages from Company Post of Command and the Battalion Commander. While performing these dangerous missions Private Green was wounded in the arm, which he bound up himself and continued to perform his duties, not reporting for medical treatment until relieved from duty two days later.
