The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Medical Corps) John Christopher Grabau, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 106th Field Artillery (Attached), 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Brabant-sur-Meuse, France, 3 November 1918. Captain Grabau displayed great coolness and courage, while under a heavy shellfire, in going to the assistance of a wounded soldier, and although twice knocked down by exploding shells and badly wounded in the arm, he continued his efforts until he ascertained the soldier was dead. Later, at the dressing station, although bleeding profusely, he refused to attend to his own wounds until he had dressed the wounds of several other men.
